I close my bag and I take a last look at my bedroom, Julie is standing by the door, drinking her coffee.
“You don’t really have to go if you don’t want to”
I sigh “I’m determined to keep my life simple. They will keep my mind busy. I’ll be fine”
“And I’ll see you at the week-end”
“You will”
“and you’ll call me everyday”
“yes mom”
“one last thing, I want to make sure you’re ready” she disappears in her room and comes back with a copy of Hello magazine “name all the people in the picture”
“Professor, I’m so sorry but the dog ate my homework”
She’s stomping her foot, better do this thing if I want to be out of here anytime before the end of the year.
“Let’s see, short guy with scarf, Mark, curly hair hottie with jeans + other equally tall hottie with long grey coat, Jason and Howard or the other way around, blond man with disturbing fur coat is my boss”
“It’s not a fur coat”
“looks like it”
“curly hair Howard, dark hair Jason, they are very different”
“Are you saying that if you were buying a kinder egg and you had a 50-50 chance of finding one of the two inside it you would be picky and say ‘I’m sorry I was really hoping I would get the dark hair this time?”
“Too tall. You know what I like. Here’s a muffin if you get hungry along the way”
“And she said her goodbyes, ready the face the unknown and dangerous world of the London underground. I’ll be fine, thanks”
I get to my new home at 7.45. I breathe deep and ring the bell.
I can hear commotion in the inside, little feet running towards the door and Dawn opening it. “Morning! You’re early!’
“Guilty as charged, if I try to be on time I’m early and I don’t think I’ve ever been late in my entire life. I just wanted to meet the two little people right there” and I pull a face at Daniel who’s standing by his mother while Emily is hiding behind her skirt. They both smile at me.
The butler takes my stuff to my bedroom – which is basically bigger than the apartment I share with Julie – while I have breakfast with the children.
We drop them off at their school and Dawn thinks it could be a good time to know each other.
We seat at Starbucks, having coffee. “I do apologize again for Gary’s reaction yesterday. He was really rude”
“Don’t worry. It’s pretty common. Besides, I laugh at it too. I mean, I should have at least had some suspicions. He left hints everywhere. Whenever he was not working at his art gallery he would only wear red tight Capri pants and pink t-shirts. He said he was a fan of Dolce & Gabbana. He loved them, really – see, I make a pun on my own misery! I just hope he’s happy. Life is too short to be mad at people”
“I’m sure…”
“Don’t say the man of my dreams is around the corner because…” I stare at the door, Dawn turns her head too, to see what I’m looking at, an old lady enters the coffee shop “… it never happens. It could have been a tall handsome stranger but I get the old lady. No luck. But I’m fine, really, I have great plans for the future like buying a cat and start talking to myself”
“I met Gary when I least expected it”
“Dawn, you’ve been out of the whole dating game for so long you don’t remember how it works. Julie is determined to find me a decent man. She has been dragging me on those blind dates for the past weeks. I guess we’re about to move the next level and just look for a man. I’ve met so many losers I came up with with an interesting cataloguing system.
Type A, married. Type B, gay. Type C, not gay, but he has just broken up with the most wonderful woman in the world. Type D, again not gay but he has just broken up with a bitch who looks exactly like me. Type E, he’s in transition from a monogamous relationship and needs more space. Type F, he’s tired of space, but he can't commit. Type G …. Ah right! He wants to commit, but he’s afraid to get too close. Type H, he's in a serious relationships but he feels she does not understand him the way she used to. They are the worst kind. And an all time favorite, type H, he’s desperate to get close, but you don't want to get near them. It’s like being stuck in the twilight zone”
She laughs and squeeze my hand “I’m sure things are about to change and you had way too much free time!”
*Need to change the subject* “If it is alright with you I think I should go and pick up the kids alone this afternoon. We need to start bonding.”
“Sounds great. Should we get some shopping done? Tomorrow I’m going back rehearsing for the tour. I need to buy some things”
“I was born to shop”
I can see she’s becoming uncomfortable “See, I like you, I think we’ll get along just fine but there’s one last thing I need to tell you” I look at her waiting “the whole nanny story we told you yesterday wasn’t very accurate. I had to fire her because she made a pass at Gary.”
Before she can add anything else I say “don’t you worry about me, I have few simple rules, stay away from married and/or committed in serious relationships men. In order for me to fancy them must be either gay or have been single for at least 3 months. Besides, Jude Law taught everybody a good lesson, don’t you think?”
